"Mary Somerville: queen of science”
For the Autumn Winter 2023 collection, Renli Su drew inspiration from Mary Somerville. Mary was well known as the ‘Queen of science’ and first female scientist. At the time, many thought women were meant to be no more than decorative objects or homemakers. However, Mary pursed writing where she often discussed her deep understanding of many of the newly emerging fields in science, mathematics and astronomy. Her achievements were so significant that the word "scientist" was formed specifically to describe her.
This collection, Renli has followed Mary's pioneering steps and immersed herself in the world of Mary's discoveries. These insights have harmoniously melded with Renli's AW23 collection.
We focused on androgynous silhouettes and romantic details; though bold, three-dimensional textures details balancing with rich yet delicate embroideries to reinterpret Mary’s curiosity and adventurous nature. In combination with the delicate embroidery, we also used floral prints to symbolise her discoveries. The key colours of the collection reference Mary’s study hall which includes soft khaki grey, muted beige, hits of coral red and a subtle olive green depicting the outdoors greenery.
