Matilda Mann

Besotted by Matilda’s poetic lyrics and quirky style, we couldn't wait to invite her to our studio to learn more. We first spotted Matilda wearing Renli Su for Notion magazine and we knew this was a match made in heaven.

Please can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background?

Hiya, I’m Matilda Mann, I'm 21 and I'm a singer songwriter from West London !

What was your journey with music and how did you become a singer and musician?

Music has just always been the thing that never felt like work. I've always loved every aspect of it.I knew from a really young age that I would do something in music. To be honest, I never even considered being an artist, it felt like the thing I'd be worse at ahah. I've always written songs since I was about 9/10 and always performed them, just cause nobody else would. I released my first 4 songs when I was 18 (that I wrote by myself and a friend from school helped me record/produce it). I found a really lovely team after that and I guess the journey of me being an actual artist started there. I've loved pretty much every second of it and I'm so so grateful I get to call this my job!

The Loch Ness Monster Im juet swimming in lakes, in my mind Too afraid to gct out and deny And my coy little smile with defend me a wh So Ill stay with the lakes in my mind And now youve faded with no traces So, who could ever tell? What youve takens been misplaced But your name doesnt ring any bells Since the day that they took you to hell

What influences you the most and where do your ideas for songs come from?

I get a lot of inspiration from movies. I think it’s the combination of the music, the characters and the story, that immediately makes me feel connected to this magical made up world, and I always try to creat that in a song. I love making up a character and writing from their perspective. I don’t write about myself all that much, there’s only so much I can say

Which singer or artist from the past would you most like to meet?

Hmm maybe David Bowie. I remember doing research on how he goes about his songwriting and he was so a ahead of the curb! He just had such a unique mind. I can’t even imagine how many more amazing songs he would've written if he was still here today. I also feel like he was a super lovely person.

Favourite current artist and song?

Oo quite a lot actually. Currently obsessed with Joy Crooks’s new song “Feet Don't Fail Me Now”.
Has such a timeless quality to it.
I love everything Hope Tala releases.
“The King” by Sarah Kingsley, is a track I WISH I had written !
Also Dodie’s new album “Build a Problem” is musical genius and I love every tracK

What are some values and beliefs you live your life by?

Everyone has a reason for the way they are. It’s not necessarily an excuse, but it makes it easier to understand why people act the way they do.
I think as a society we're so unforgiving and quick to judge. We never really leave time to understand. I think if we did, everyone would be a little more relaxed, and would feel confident, in the way they
